Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a way in which we at OptiSmile work with our patients to get a better idea of the best way to improve the appearance of their teeth. We use this technology in particular when we are going to be working extensively on creating the best possible dental design for each client, but also for smaller procedures such as if a crown needs replacing.
Dental implants and veneers can dramatically alter the appearance of your face and it’s therefore important to have a realistic understanding of what can be achieved for you. Digital Smile Design takes into consideration the current condition of your teeth, your expectations and the capabilities of the technology available to produce a tangible representation of your new smile.
DSD, in essence, allows you to become the co-creator of your new smile.
Digital Smile Design is changing the face of aesthetic dental treatments and is used by leading dentists all over the world. It’s a visual software that essentially helps dentists work with their patients to address their main cosmetic dental concerns and the process will generally go as follows:
The Digital Smile Designs process won’t always involve all the above mentioned steps and can sometimes be a lot quicker, depending on the extent of work that is required on the teeth. Simply replacing a dental inlay, crown, veneer or implant can potentially take place during the same consultation, as a ceramic tooth can be cut in as little as 30 minutes based upon the design.
Digital Smile Design is a supplementary smile restoration technology that helps a patient work with their dentists to find the best look based on their own preference. Its main benefit lies in the fact that it allows the patient to see what their new smile will look like before embarking on any dental treatments. You therefore get to see how much of a life-changing difference a new smile is likely to have.
This is particularly useful in instances where the dental restoration process is likely to be extensive and costly. However, our practice is geared to provide quick dental restoration services as well.
We use advanced CEREC CAD/CAM technology. This allows us to take 3D images of your mouth or tooth and adjust the imagery to what is required, whether this be a complete crown, veneers, fillings or dental implants.
Depending on what you need doing, this process can be extremely quick. For example, it’s possible to get a ceramic tooth cut in as little as 30 minutes on our premises, if required.
We use CEREC CAD/CAM technology as it allows us to perform work on a microscopic level to minimise any alteration of a patient’s natural teeth, particularly if veneers are a consideration.
Our team are always willing to talk you through the process, so come and visit us in our Cape Town dental offices or send us your questions online. We can then help advise you on what your next steps should be.
