What is a Periodontist?

What Is A Periodontist? A Little More About Gum Disease…

A periodontist is a dental specialist with advanced training. Specialising in the diagnosis and management of all diseases affecting the tooth-supporting tissues. This is known scientifically as the periodontal tissues, which simply implies the gums and bone around your teeth.
South African periodontists are unique and considered to be the dermatologists and plastic surgeons of the oral tissues! The 4-year postgraduate programme ensures expertise in disease prevention and gum disease control. Periodontists also specialise in regenerative and reconstructive techniques around teeth and implants. Periodontists are trained experts in the placement and maintenance of dental implants.

Good oral care and a professional cleaning every 6 months is recommended to help prevent gum disease and maintain a healthy mouth. Bacteria can build up and cause infection in the gums which can then become inflamed and start to bleed. At this stage, it is known as gingivitis, and can be easily rectified, but if left unattended, it will affect the support structures and cause periodontal disease, needing treatment and management from a periodontist. Bleeding gums can also lead to bad breath.
